SHEPTON NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INFORMATION

SHEPTON NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INFORMATION

Selection Procedure

In September, all eligible sophomores receive invitations to become candidates for membership in Shepton's chapter of the National Honor Society. The initial criterion for selection is a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 or higher. Additionally, students must have been in attendance in the Plano ISD for one full semester to be eligible.

Membership induction for NHS will occur in May 2011.  National Honor Society membership is not a right guaranteed to all students; it is an honor granted by the faculty to students who uphold the four ideals of National Honor Society: scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

Shepton's selection procedure for National Honor Society is based on standards provided by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the national organization governing NHS.   All students must follow this process to be inducted in the spring.

1.    In September, tenth grade students who have attended at least one full semester in PISD and who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 or higher will be invited to become candidates for NHS. They will receive information about dues and about NHS policies at that time. [Students who become eligible in the spring will receive information in January about candidacy.]

2.    Students will spend the year participating in activities and service projects with the organization. Students must earn 8 service hours each semester to remain eligible for induction. These may be achieved through volunteer service to the school (maximum of 2 hours) or the community.

3.    Students should display behavior consistent with the standards of scholarship, leadership, and character. This includes taking an active part in club activities, being a role model for students at Shepton, maintaining the Stallion Standard, and showing academic and personal integrity in and out of the classroom.

4.    In January and April, students will turn in completed service hours. Grade eligibility will be re-evaluated in January. The names of all students who have paid their dues, satisfied the GPA requirement, and completed their service hours will be submitted to the faculty for approval. The faculty will consider the candidates in terms of the four ideals of NHS and will submit evaluations of the students being considered.

5.    A five-member Faculty Council selected by the principal will meet to review the candidates for membership. NHS sponsors will not serve on this council. The council will consider the comments and concerns from the faculty regarding any candidate's character, leadership, scholarship, or service and will select the candidates who will be invited to be inducted. The National Honor Society does not operate on a quota system; all students whom the Faculty Council feels uphold the ideals of National Honor Society and who complete the requirements for membership will be invited to join the organization.

6.    Students will be notified of their selection or non-selection prior to the induction ceremony. Students must be formally inducted to be considered National Honor Society Members. Membership in the Shepton National Honor Society will be transferred to Plano West Senior High after students leave Shepton.

The Ideals of National Honor Society

Scholarship: Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.6 or higher to remain eligible for membership in N.H.S. At the end of the fall semester candidates whose cumulative GPA is below 3.6 will no longer be eligible for membership at Shepton. These students may qualify again for membership during their junior or senior years of high school.

Leadership: National Honor Society students are leaders both in and out of the classroom. N.H.S. candidates should demonstrate qualities of leadership on a daily basis by following school rules and policies, and by setting an example for other Shepton students with their actions. Candidates also have opportunities to demonstrate leadership by serving as a N.H.S. officer and by volunteering to organize service activities for the organization. If you have ideas for a service project you would like to be in charge of, please talk to one of the sponsors or officers.

Service: National Honor Society candidates are required to perform 8 hours of service per semester to remain eligible for membership. All service hours should be recorded on a form available from an adviser or from the NHS bulletin board located in the main foyer. The signature of an adult who will vouch for participation must verify service hours.

All 8 hours may be community service hours but some hours may be related to school, religion, and other volunteer organizations.  However, you are limited to

2 hours in each of the following categories, with only 4 hours coming from the following three areas while the other 4 are community based:

Only 2 school hours:  volunteering via another school club/organization; helping a teacher after school will not count as service hours

Only 2 faith-based hours:  church choir, children’s program, bingo night, etc.

Only 2 other service groups to which you belong:  boy or girl scouts, junior league, neighborhood watch group, etc.

      visits to nursing homes

      elementary carnivals

      Habitat for Humanities

      Feeding the homeless

      Bell Ringing for Salvation Army

CHARACTER: The Shepton High School faculty considers character to be an extremely important factor in selecting students for National Honor Society. During the year, you should make every effort to demonstrate character traits that let those around you know that you are a person worthy of admission to an honor society. Your Shepton student planner contains information on Active Character Traits and on Student Status. National Honor Society candidates should strive to embody traits such as honesty, tolerance, integrity, school spirit, success within the rules, respect for others and perseverance. Students violating the student code of conduct or involved in an incident of cheating may be denied membership by the Faculty Council. [Note: Cheating is defined in the Student Handbook and includes both in-class work, such as tests and quizzes, and homework assignments.]

Final Notes

National Honor Society is your organization, and its activities this year will be determined by your willingness to become involved. Please let me know if there is any way I can assist you in making this year a positive and rewarding experience for you.
